City of Fountain Fire Department
Volunteer Firefighter
Application
The City of Fountain Fire Department has an integrated staff of career and volunteer firefighters. The volunteer firefighters have the same responsibilities and training requirements as the career firefighters, and are eligible to join special response teams within the department such as the Hazardous Materials Team, the Technical Rescue Team, Wildland Fire Team, and Tactical Emergency Medical Service Team. Volunteer firefighters are also provided opportunities to participate in training's offered within the state of Colorado as well as nationally. Volunteer firefighters are required to pull three 12-hour shifts a month. The shifts are from 08:00 - 20:00, and 20:00 – 08:00. When they are off duty, volunteer firefighters are alerted through a smartphone app to respond to large incidents such as wildland fires and structure fires.
A potential volunteer firefighter starts the journey by completing a volunteer application and participating through the selection process to become a fire academy candidate of the South Group Fire Academy. This academy is a joint program with the Fountain Fire Department, Security Fire Department, and Hanover Fire Department. The program allows the departments to share training resources and train new firefighters to a common standard. The fire academy is an eight-month program starting in February of each year. During the academy each candidate receives the training above-and-beyond the requirements of the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control. The certifications gained during the academy are the following:
- Firefighter I (IFSAC & Pro-Board Accredited),
- Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations (IFSAC & Pro-Board Accredited), and
- Wildland Firefighter 2 (National Wildfire Coordinating Group).
Upon graduating from the South Group Fire Academy, the candidates become sworn volunteer firefighters through the City of Fountain.
Volunteer EMS Provider
The City of Fountain Fire Department has an exceptional Emergency Medical Service (EMS) program. This program includes career paramedics and emergency medical technicians, but also the department welcomes volunteer EMS providers. These volunteer EMS providers are held to the same standard as the career providers. The applicants must hold a current Colorado state paramedic or EMT certification. Once selected into the EMS academy, the candidates must successfully complete a four-month field internship program where they are teamed up with seasoned paramedics and EMTs to help them succeed in becoming independent EMS providers on an ambulance. Volunteer EMS providers are required to pull three 12-hour shifts a month. The shifts are from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM, and 8:00 PM – 8:00 AM. When they are off duty, volunteer EMS providers are alerted through a smartphone app to respond to large incidents such as a mass causality incident or disaster.
Applications for volunteer fire fighter and EMS provider are accepted year round. The Fountain Fire Department selects new candidates once a year around December 1st to attend the fire or EMS academy beginning February of the following year.
