Colorado Department of Public Health Hosts Open House in Fountain

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will host an open house to discuss the development of a PFOS/PFOA site-specific groundwater standard (not a drinking water standard) in the Security, Widefield and Fountain area. Members of the public who wish to apply for party status to testify about the proposed standard before the Water Quality Control Commission are encouraged to attend. The application deadline for party status is mid-January. The commission hearing on the standard will be held April 2018.

A water quality standard is created to protect existing and potential beneficial uses of water. In this case, the site-specific groundwater standard will address a specific geographic area of concern in El Paso County. PFOA/PFOS are two compounds within a larger family of perfluorinated compounds. These human-made substances do not occur naturally in the environment. They have been used for decades as an ingredient to make products that resist heat, oil and grease, and are also used in various products including firefighting foams, and surface protection products for carpets and clothing.
